I was an idiot. Plain and simple. That was the only thought running through my mind as I kept a white knuckled grip on my truckâs steering wheel.
I shouldn't have left Mari behind. I shouldn't have left her in my house where she could get up to some trouble.
I looked at the clock on the dash. It had always been about five minutes fast, but this time as I looked at the hour I figured I had plenty of time to get out to where John and the boys were scouting and get back to the house well before she woke up.
With a little luck Iâd wake up in the morning next to Mari and she wouldn't even realize Iâd been gone.
I couldn't shake the feeling that I was going to need more than a little luck tonight.
I tried to push that thought away. To tell myself that's how I felt every time we were getting ready to go out on one of these things.
Whatever. I needed to be out here. I was the one who started all of this, after all, and I wasn't going to let them go into harm's way without me.
I pulled the truck off the side of the road at a small stand of trees where I saw a sign John had left behind for anyone who knew what to look for.
Sure enough there was a group of trucks hidden from the main road. And I was immediately greeted by several guys coming up to me with weapons drawn. Including John. As soon as he got a look at who was behind the wheel he grinned.
"I surrender!" I said with a laugh.
âI thought that was you, you idiot,â John said with a laugh of his own. âWhat happened to your hot date?â
I thought about telling him the truth. That I couldnât bear the thought of all of them being out here without me. That if something happened and I wasnât out here to make sure everything went just right Iâd never be able to forgive myself.
That there were already too many people in my life who were gone because I wasnât around to help them when they really needed it.
None of that would fly with this crowd though.
âYou know how it is. Got what I needed with the old lady and now itâs time for some work!â
There were some hoots and hollers, all nice and quiet so we didnât make too much noise, but that was it. This was a professional group.
âWhat happened to this being a scouting run?â I asked.
Johnâs grin turned a little sheepish. âWell some of the guys were out here and we figured this was a big deal and we didnât want to bother you andâ¦â
I waved a hand to stop the explaining. Iâd really wanted to make him uncomfortable more than anything else.
âSo whatâs the plan look like tonight?â I asked.
âWeâve been seeing lights out there in the middle of the cornfield for most of the night,â John said. âThe way I figure it thatâs no party.
